NGen Experience


If you want to change the world, you’re going to need help. The NGen Experience at Embark is a unique leadership development and networking opportunity for sector leaders age 40 and under. It’s where you’ll rub elbows with influential charitable sector executives, share ideas with the smartest thought leaders, and trade business cards with new colleagues while sipping mojitos on the shores of Biscayne Bay.

In short, it’s where your passion for improving the world will be amplified and where your career will suddenly accelerate.

All conference attendees age 40 and under are eligible to participate in NGen sessions, networking receptions, and social activities at Embark. In addition, the NGen Experience will feature an exclusive pre-program before Embark, beginning with a poolside reception in the evening of Monday, Oct. 26, and continuing with special morning sessions and a luncheon on Tuesday, Oct. 27. An small additional fee applies to the pre-conference program.

NGen Poolside Welcome Reception

6:00 PM-8:00 PM

The NGen Experience, for conference attendees 40 and under, kicks off the evening before the official opening of Embark with a private poolside reception. Featuring music, a mojito tasting, salsa lessons, and, of course, networking, the reception is the perfect way for NGeners to get a taste of Miami while getting to know new colleagues.

Leveraging Grassroots Movements to Achieve Long-term Change

9:15 AM – 10:45 AM

The civil rights movement didn’t remake America overnight. In fact, the events of this decade show that its work isn’t finished. How can you capture the zeitgeist today? How can you keep your coalition engaged over the long years necessary to achieve permanent social change?

In this session, learn how past civil society leaders collaborated with spontaneous grassroots movements to create sustained, long-term advocacy campaigns that survive apathy and quotidian politics to achieve lasting change.

NGen Luncheon: Next Generation Leaders in Social Justice Movements

11:15 AM – 1:00 PM

The pursuit of social justice requires strength of heart and character. It is filled with triumphs and setbacks and is often times led by next generation leaders. Hear from next generation leaders involved in local and national social justice campaigns in the areas of immigration, criminal justice, civil rights and the environment. Learn about and discuss the joys and pains, hopes and fears and lessons learned fighting for social justice as a next generation leader.

Redefining Leadership for a New World

4:00 pm – 5:30 pm

One of the upsides to our country’s rapidly changing demographics is that the next generation of charitable sector leaders will guide the most diverse workforce in American history. This brings with it incredible opportunities to leverage unique perspectives and learn from varied life experiences. It also presents the challenge of building consensus among dissimilar parties. As we look to create a future of stronger social justice, is it time to reconsider traditional models of leadership? Learn about new possibilities that are being tested and how they might be employed to shape diversity into common purpose.

Achieving Social Justice Through Strategic Communications

When it comes to changing the world, a passion for social justice isn’t enough. To build momentum, gain allies, and get noticed by a public overwhelmed by the demands of competing causes, a movement needs to be equipped with a strategic communications plan. By aligning your messages across traditional media, advertising, thought leadership, social media grassroots efforts, and other emerging media, you can build a movement that amplifies its own voice and gets heard. Learn from experts who will discuss successful campaigns and provide guidance on how to improve your own communications.

Pursuing Social Justice through Public Office

2:00 pm – 3:30 pm

In the House of Representatives, the average age of a member is 57, even though the minimum age of election is only 25. In the Senate, the average is 61 with a minimum elected age of just 30. Elected office – whether local, state, or national – is one of the most powerful positions for affecting social change. So, why aren’t there more young policymakers? Take an in-depth look at the barriers to entry into politics and how they can be broken down to usher in a new wave of passionate young political leaders.

Innovation in the Charitable Sector

4:00 pm–5:00 pm

Join the Independent Sector’s 2014 American Express NGen Fellows to learn how charitable sector organization understand and approach innovation. Fellows will present findings from research conducted in collaboration with the Forbes Fund on how organizations from across the nonprofit and philanthropic sector are currently defining and practicing innovation. Hear about best practices and recommendations for how charitable sector organizations can become more innovative in their business models and strategies, staffing, project design, internal processes, products, culture, and practice.

Changing the Scope of Social Entrepreneurship

8:30 am – 10:00 am

There’s a common lamentation – or, perhaps, a myth – in the charitable sector about young talent. It says that the best and brightest often forsake their passions for social change in favor of the financial stability of the private sector. If that was ever true, next generation leaders have found a way to have their cake and eat it too: social entrepreneurship. By using business principles and practices, including profit generation, young innovators are solving highly specific community challenges. What remains is a key question. Can social entrepreneurship be scaled up to solve systemic problems?
